Shopmobility expands service due to increasing demand

Shopmobility, the service that provides scooters and wheelchairs to mobility impaired shoppers and visitors to Bristol, has announced the official opening of its Cabot Circus unit.
The new unit, located on the ground floor of the Cabot Circus car park, has a full range of manual or powered wheelchairs and scooters for hire, either by the hour or for days at a time under a long-term scheme.
On 31st July the unit will be opened by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Christopher Davies, along with representatives from Cabot Circus, Broadmead, the Bristol Alliance and Bristol City Council. Regular users and local disability organisations will also be in attendance.
To coincide with the opening, Shopmobility will also be extending its opening hours at its location in The Mall Bristol in Broadmead. The service will now operate from 11am until 5pm three days a week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Janet Scammell MBE, Chair of Bristol Shopmobility, said: “The idea of a Shopmobility in Bristol started in 1991 with the first unit opening in 1996 and we have since built up a good base of regular customers all with varying needs.
“The opening of Cabot Circus last year obviously increased the demand for our services, so we are delighted to have a new unit conveniently located in the car park, along with 21 parking spaces for our users. We have also recognised that the new Primark store will lead to increased demand, this is why we have extended our opening hours in The Mall Bristol.”
Shopmobility has a range of scooters that come in various different versions and sizes. They can be pre-booked or picked up on arrival.
“Not everyone realises but we are open to anyone with a temporary or permanent mobility impairment. Our four members of staff are fully experienced in working with disabled people and can help select the best equipment for the user, whether they are just browsing the shops, sightseeing in Bristol or on business,” concluded Janet.
