CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN BEGINS WITH OPENING OF FESTIVE CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Saturday, 12th November 2011

Bristol’s Christmas market will be officially opened for business by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Geoff Gollop, on Thursday 10 November at 4pm, as the city centre’s festive season begins.

Located on the pedestrianised streets of Bristol’s city centre shopping area , the German-themed Christmas market will feature quaint wooden chalet-style stalls offering visitors unique gift ideas, original homemade crafts, drinks and a variety of food. Festive eats will include gluhwein, bratwurst, waffles, crepes, apple rings, liquorice, chocolates and cakes.  Alongside the stalls, the market will be home to a stunning Christmas pyramid, children’s carousel, Bavarian beer garden, giant advent calendar, Christmas decorations, lights and a nativity scene.

Destination Bristol’s City Centre Retail Manager, Jo Hawkins, said:  “The opening of the market will create such a fantastic atmosphere and will really help to set the scene for the switching on of Bristol city centre’s spectacular Christmas lights taking place the day after on Friday 11 November at Cabot Circus.”

“The German Christmas market not only offers a charming environment for Christmas shopping, but also provides a festive backdrop for meeting up with family and friends in the build up to Christmas.”

The German market will later be joined by a local ‘12 days of Christmas’ market which will offer a selection of locally-sourced produce from 9 to 20 December.  Located on Broadmead West this market will be a great place to buy Christmas gifts including retro jewellery, sustainable bamboo clothing and handmade candle lanterns all produced locally.  A fine selection of food, including cheeses and handmade chocolate will also be available.
